Why land borders are stricter than people expect
Flying in, airlines check your documents at the gate. Driving or walking across, there's no gate check — so the border officer does it instead. US Customs and Border Protection and the Canada Border Services Agency can and do turn visitors away at the crossing for insufficient ties or no proof of onward travel, especially for visa-exempt and B1/B2 travelers. Country-by-country at the border
United States
No visa holder or visa-exempt visitor is exempt from proving intent to leave. CBP officers at land crossings may ask how and when you'll depart; travelers without plans documented are frequently sent to secondary inspection.
Canada
Visa-exempt visitors entering by land must satisfy the officer they will leave Canada at the end of their stay. CBSA officers commonly ask for a return ticket, itinerary or proof of funds — especially for long stays.
Mexico
Entry by land is largely unstamped, but immigration (INM) checkpoints do occur, and tourists must hold an onward or return ticket if asked. FMM tourist-card holders should be able to show how they leave the country.
